Kor Institute of Music is a working studio in Surrey, BC, founded in 2001 by Gurmeet Kor. This is who we are, what we teach, and how we got here.

The institute gives you the real-world experience and guidance in the latest music technology and music instruments. Meet the founder

A teacher first. A director second.

We are here to provide the highest standards in the music education which also strives to extraordinary results from our students.

For more than two decades, Gurmeet Kor has trained in the Guru Granth Sahib tradition of Gurmat Sangeet and the wider Indian classical lineage. The institute she founded is a working studio, not a school that only administers — students learn directly from the founder's lineage, alongside the master teachers she works with.

Anindo Chatterjee

Pandit Anindo Chatterjee is one of the foremost tabla players of his generation. A disciple of Ustad Amir Hussain Khan and Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh, he has performed across the world with maestros of Hindustani classical music for more than five decades. At KIM, Pandit-ji teaches the classical Punjab gharana tradition — the same lineage that gives Gurmat Sangeet its rhythmic foundation.

Gurmeet Kor

Gurmeet Kor is the founder of Kor Institute of Music and a professional musician who has taught Gurmat Sangeet and Indian Classical vocal music for over two decades. She trained under senior musicians in the Guru Granth Sahib tradition and brings the love of the Shabad into every lesson. Students describe her teaching as a place where you do not just learn music — you learn to be a better person.

Twenty-five years of KIM

From a single class in 2001 — to forty-five countries today.

  1. 2001

    Founded in Surrey, BC. The first Gurmat Sangeet class meets in a small studio.

  2. 2008

    Curriculum expands to Indian Classical Music — raga and tala — taught alongside Gurmat Sangeet.

  3. 2012

    The institute moves into its current home on Beecher St, and online lessons begin for students outside BC.

  4. 2018

    First International Online Music Competition — students from twelve countries perform.

  5. 2020

    KIM crosses forty-five countries. International Online Music Competition 2020 runs remotely with hundreds of participants.

  6. 2025

    Twenty-five years on — 1200+ students, four recorded studio albums, and a global community.
